Permission to Vote as you Please

November 3rd, 2008 § 7

I am hearing alot of talk in the church about this election.  Most of what upsets me is that much of what I hear suggests that real Christians only vote for (their candidate)...

This is simply untrue.  There are a lot of issues out there, as there always are.  A vote for one issue is a vote against another.

So if God is telling you that issue A is more important than Issue B vote your conscience. The Bible does not teach that Christians should belong to any specific political party.  The Bible teaches us that we are citizens of a kingdom, not a democracy.

As we live in this temporary system of government called a representative republic, we are taught to value human life, economic justice, the environment and much more. All of this plays into your vote.

So if and when you walk into that polling place tomorrow, please remember Micah 6:8 “…do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” Vote your conscience, and vote your heart.  But please don’t think that your brother or sister in Christ who feels called to support human life and votes for McCain is evil or twisted.  Likewise, if you vote for McCain, please don’t accuse your neighbor of murder if they believe Obama’s stance on economic justice is worth voting for.

And for those of you who hate candidate A or Candidate B or their party or whatever.  Please remember that God sets up his leaders.  Your vote is simply a formality – God’s plan always prevails. Whoever wins has been placed in authority by God and our God calls us all to submit to those in authority over us.

How should you vote next week?

I try to make it a point not to talk politics.  I have at times made my ambivalence a joke, but I found a post that really brings important truth to this topic, and even puts some words to my ambivalence.

My wife reads this blog written by some Shaun Groves guy.  He is apparently a popular Christian Musician.  She raves about him all the time, what a funny writer he is, and how profound he is on his blog.

Sure, I am a little jealous.  But you know what?  She’s right.  The guy really does make some great points, and I don’t mean to make light of him, he is a great musician with a heart for some important things.  Go read his blog if you need to see for yourself.  I direct you to his post on the impending election.  Frankly, it makes more sense than anything I can say.  But let me paraphrase in case your clicker is broken.

Christians are freaking out right now because unless (fill in name of candidate here) wins this election we will all be slaughtered, muslims will bomb the country, the rich and powerful will destroy the poor and eat their babies, the earth will melt and penguins will run rampant.

But the reality is that the church thrives under persecution, we already have a king who is over every president, and he will have his way.

So when you go the poll, and you worry that the other guy might win.  Remember that they both bow the knee to the same ruler, and take some peace in the knowledge that this king will do what he pleases and has promises to prosper his people and fulfill his plan.  And his plan ends with everything unhappy becoming untrue, so don’t stress too much.

Cryogenic Freezing – the answer to all our fears

April 1st, 2008 § 1

It was sad really. Last night, my lovely wife and I were watching 20/20, or dateline, or one of those other mindless shows. One of the stories was about people who had chosen to have themselves cryogenically frozen. The hope is that one day, whatever killed them, will be treatable. At that point they will be revived and healed.

There was a range of people being interviewed. We learned from one couple, that their desire was to be together forever, and this was the way they hoped to accomplish that. We discovered that these people had set up trust funds which if left for a hundred years could make them multi millionaires when they wake up. Which is probably a good thing considering inflation ad the cost of medical care.

We saw large stainless steel coffins which maintained a constant -325 degrees and housed the remains of four individuals.

Despite all this, the most disturbing image we saw was when a family was interviewed. The whole family was going to be frozen (at a rate of 75,000 per person) there were the parents and three children ranging from possibly 8 to 12. One girl was asked, “why do you want to be frozen?” her answer? “its better than having no hope at all.

No hope? What do you mean? The only hope in death that this young girl has is that one day she will be able to be thawed out and restored to life in a tragically diseased flesh in a suffering and hurting world??? That is her only hope.

We live in a society where people’s greatest hope is to be frozen so that one day they can live. Their greatest hope is to live. Wow! It happens that I have a greater hope. That I will live in the world the way it was always supposed to be, and then I will never die.

That’s my only hope.

And we Shall Make a Name for Ourselves

This summer in Europe Physicists will be searching for God!  Actually, they will be searching for the final answer which will make sense of everything else. Newsweek has an interesting interview with the lead Scientist.

Reading this is kind of sad.  Someone so intent on disbelief, that human beings only meaning in life is what they make for themselves.  Science attempts  to explain alot of things, but it can never explain pain, suffering and death.

Not really – Read the article, and I would love to hear your thoughts – Will Physicists Find God?– Newsweek.com

Is Rob Bell the Next Billy Graham?

December 4th, 2007 § 3

You have got to watch this video!  A pastor I admire a great deal has just appeared on CNN talking about Sex.  Bell  has a lot of great ideas, and CNN calls him the next Billy Graham.  Some will want to argue with me because some of his theology is different than mine, but you know what?  he is doing a lot more to redeem and reform his culture than I am.

Take a look at the Video.

Those Are Obviously My Footprints  — just a caution — not for eyes that like pretty words only.

Pray for him.

Not enough bank account to go around

October 29th, 2007 § 2

Ok that’s it! I have had it, I am sick and tired of rich people in the third world asking me to handle their money for them! Just now I got an email from a marine trying to hide 25 million dollars of Saddam Hussein’s money in my bank account. And of course split it with me for the favor of hiding it for awhile. » Read the rest of this entry «

Suing God

If you never read anything written in legalese you should read this. A man is suing God. What will they think of next? A flying Spaghetti Monster has already been done. More on that later.

Stop placing blame

August 31st, 2007 § 5

Ok a new story out recently is pointing fingers at VA tech administrators for not acting faster when they found the first two students killed.  The Idea is that had they warned the campus, the eventual death toll may have been decreased.  People are actually calling for the resignation of the president over this!  I am sick of this nonsense… » Read the rest of this entry «
