Did Glenn Beck Seriously say that??

March 10th, 2010 § 2

I think he claims to be a Mormon, so you maybe can’t fault him too much for not understanding the point of the Bible. But Glenn Beck is encouraging his listeners to leave their church if the church cares about social or economic Justice. Maybe the sound bytes I heard are ripped out of context,. but with an agenda like his, somehow I have a hard time believing that. In case you had any doubt, Justice is one of the most important themes in all of scripture. Please don’t attend a church that does not care about Justice. http://amplify.com/u/2rza

Hopefully by now you’ve learned that those words were indeed taken out of context. What Glenn Beck actually says on this topic is that charity belongs with the individual and with church groups – based on their voluntary desire to help the less fortunate. He points out that the Bible tells US to help the poor, not the government. What he was warning against was the number of places where church leaders are advocating for particular political parties and programs from the pulpit, using terms that *sound* worthy, like social justice, to explain why it is “right” for government to take assets from one group of people and give them to another group of people. I happen to agree with him that I do not want to hear sermons that tell my that one political candidate, or party, should be elected instead of another.

Did you know that people who tend to call themselves conservatives give far more money to charity than do those who call themselves liberal? (Read Gross National Happiness by Arthur Brooks. When he started his research, he thought it would be the other way around!)

well I hope it was out of context. I stand by what I said. Any church that is not interested in social justice is not very biblical.

I will also say that a church that is overtly political in nature is wasting their time.

As I just posted. We have a king, not a senate or a president. It is good and right to work toward what is good. But it is wrong to assume that either republicans, democrats, liberals or conservatives have the solutions to the problems of the world.

That is the call of the church alone.
